LBJ senior Ava Longi walked out of the Jamail Texas Swimming Center with four shiny gold medals around her neck to a future that promises to be just as bright.
Her coach, Tracie Gardner, described Longi as a swimmer who “comes around maybe once in a decade if you’re lucky.”
Capping a high school career with victories in the Class 5A 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and a pair of relays, the Texas-bound Jaguar surprised herself during the UIL state swimming and diving meet Saturday.
Longi was modest about her medal haul, saying “anybody could have won” those races. After she posed for photos, the impact of being the queen of the pool was starting to sink in.
“I practice so often and put in a lot of hard work that people don’t see behind the scenes,” she said. “It’s finally paying off.”
